Mother’s Day in Spanish-speaking Countries
Mother’s Day is celebrated all over the world, and Latin America and Spain are no exception. However, not every country celebrates on the same day.
Several countries celebrate on the same date as the United States- the second Sunday in May. This includes Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Honduras, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
Many Spanish-speaking countries still celebrate Mother’s Day in May:
- Spain: first Sunday in May
- Dominican Republic: last Sunday in May
- Mexico, Guatemala, and Belize: May 10th
- Paraguay: May 15th
- Bolivia: May 27th
- Nicaragua: May 30th
Some countries have their Mother’s Day celebrations in other months:
- Costa Rica: August 15th
- Argentina: third Sunday in October
- Panama: December 8th
Despite different days for the holiday, people celebrate Mother’s Day in similar ways. Like in the United States, cards and flowers are customary gifts. It’s also common to serve breakfast in bed or go out to a restaurant for a special meal.

te amo / te quiero (1) |
|
(1) The decision to use “te amo” or “te quiero” varies; in some regions, “te amo” is typically reserved for romantic love and “te quiero” is for family and friends. Other people use “te amo” for family and very close friends and “te quiero” for other friends. Some hardly use “te amo” at all because it is so romantic it’s cheesy!

Mother’s Day Songs in Spanish
Here are two songs that our family loves - both to celebrate moths and apply some of Spanish Mother’s Day vocabulary!
Mami
This is a sweet ballad celebrating moms. It has such a touching message about the significance of mothers in our lives. I might have teared up a bit listening! I also appreciate that the video has lyrics. You and your child can read and sing along as you learn the song!
Día de la Madre
This song is more upbeat and more specifically about celebrating Mother’s Day. It includes a lot of common Mother’s Day vocabulary in Spanish. There are some from our list in the song as well! The song is repetitive so it’s a bit easier to learn and sing-along.
Did you know? Habbi Habbi has a great book about working moms: “Book of Careers Vol1”. My family loves it because it features not only diverse women but also diverse career choices!
Spanish Mother’s Day Printable Cards
As a mother myself, a personally made card or craft is one of my favorite Mother’s Day gifts. This sweet printable makes for a simple homemade and heartfelt card that children can personalize by coloring and writing a personal message.
It includes one specifically for mom, one specifically for grandma, and a generic “Happy Mother’s Day” card for any motherly figure in children’s lives - and can include aunts or other important guardians and caretakers!
