Father’s Day in Spanish-speaking Countries

Father’s Day is celebrated all over the world, and Latin America and Spain are no exception. However, not every country celebrates on the same day.

In the United States, we celebrate on the third Sunday in June. That is the same date as many other countries in Central and South America. This includes Argentina, Belize, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela.

Some countries celebrate Father’s Day in June, but on different days:

  • El Salvador and Guatemala: June 17th
  • Nicaragua: June 23rd

Other countries have their Father’s Day observances the following month:

  • Uruguay: second Sunday of July
  • Dominican Republic: last Sunday of July

A few countries have their celebrations in the spring. Spain, Bolivia, and Honduras all celebrate Father’s Day on March 19th, which coincides with Saint Joseph’s Day.

Despite celebrating on different days, many Spanish-speaking countries celebrate their fathers similarly to people in the United States. People give cards and gifts to show their love and appreciation. Some plan special meals or otherwise spend quality time with their dads.

te amo / te quiero *

(1) The decision to use “te amo” or “te quiero” varies; in some regions, “te amo” is typically reserved for romantic love and “te quiero” is for family and friends. Other people use “te amo” for family and very close friends and “te quiero” for other friends. Some hardly use “te amo” at all because it is so romantic it’s cheesy!

Father’s Day Songs in Spanish

To both celebrate fathers and apply some of the Spanish Father’s Day vocabulary, here are two songs our family enjoys!

Para Papá

This upbeat song shares how dads are important to our children. They help their kids be brave, protect them, and are there to support them. The music video also includes the lyrics and highlights them as a sing-along making it a bit easier to learn and read along as you sing!

Por Amor a mi Padre

For a traditional mariachi song to celebrate Father’s Day, try out this song. It’s a very touching and beautiful song. And if your children like farms, they will enjoy the video as well! The tempo is a bit slower than some other mariachi songs, so it is a little easier to listen and follow along, even though it does not include lyrics.

Did you know? Habbi Habbi has a great book about working dads: “Book of Careers Vol. 2”. My family loves it because it features not only diverse dads, but diverse career choices!
